Will eSIM Work Well in Afghanistan? A Traveler Guide to Internet Quality
Complete guide to eSIM internet speeds, network coverage, and connection quality for travelers in Afghanistan. Find out what speeds to expect and where eSIM works best.
-
Does Roami switch between Roshan, MTN, and Salaam in Afghanistan automatically?
Yes — that’s one of Roami’s key advantages. As you move from cities to rural areas, your eSIM automatically switches to the carrier with the strongest signal at your location. Typically Roshan is fastest in urban centers (5G speeds of 100-300 Mbps), while MTN maintains better coverage in the countryside. Afghanistan is primarily 4G, limited coverage in major cities. You never need to manually change networks. -
How does Roami compare to Saily for eSIM in Afghanistan?
Roami typically offers better value for Afghanistan eSIM because we sell directly — no marketplace markup. Prices are usually 10-20% lower than Saily. We also provide 24/7 direct support. Plans are prepaid with no auto-renewal, so you won’t be charged after your trip ends. -
Is eSIM cheaper than international roaming for Afghanistan?
Yes — Roami eSIM is typically 80-90% cheaper than roaming plans from most home carriers. A 5GB plan for Afghanistan costs $43.99, while roaming can easily cost $50+ for the same data. You also get local network speeds instead of throttled roaming. -
I'm traveling to Afghanistan for just 2-3 days. What eSIM should I get?
For a short trip, the 1GB/7 day plan ($11.99) covers maps and messaging. If you plan to use social media and share photos, the 3GB plan ($27.99) gives more breathing room. Both activate instantly and you can top up if needed. -
Can I use navigation apps like Google Maps with eSIM in Afghanistan?
Yes — Google Maps uses about 5MB per hour for navigation with real-time traffic. Download offline maps for Afghanistan (about 200-500MB per city) before you go as a backup. -
How does eSIM compare to pocket WiFi for Afghanistan travel?
Where eSIM really wins is convenience. No device to carry, charge or return at the end of the trip, worth roughly $3-5 per day against pocket WiFi rental. Pocket WiFi helps groups of 3 or more, but you are attached to one device and its 6 to 8 hour battery. With eSIM your phone is the hotspot, and all Roami plans share free with up to 5 devices. -
Can I keep my home SIM in my phone while using eSIM in Afghanistan?
Indeed — the home SIM stays in slot 1 for SMS and 2FA logins, and the eSIM covers data in slot 2. Turn off data roaming on the home SIM to avoid charges of up to $10-15 per MB. -
Will my eSIM in Afghanistan work for video calls and remote work?
Absolutely. Roshan networks provide stable connections for Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet. For remote work, a 10GB or unlimited plan is recommended. The eSIM also supports hotspot sharing for your laptop.
